Bridge Back Frames
Inspired by the shapes and feeling of a hand-made musical instrument, our frames are designed with 360-degree attention to detail. This means that we put as much care into the design of the back of the frame as the front. From the materials to the manufacturing process—there is nothing about these frames that we care to hide.
The frame’s unique “bridge back” is an elegant solution for opening and closing the frame, while allowing for many mat sizes. The detachable stand can display the frame in landscape and portrait positions.
FSC certified beech, spruce and/or hickory from managed forests in Nova Scotia, Canada, make up the back panel and joinery of the frames. The spruce in the frames is scrap material, from musical instrument backs called tonewood. The beech and hickory are scraps from a flooring business, when possible. All of this very high quality wood is secured through a close relationship with Windhorse Farm.*
FSC certified walnut is used for the bridge back and detachable stand pieces and for the hardwood frames. We use scrap walnut from flooring, when possible.
Bamboo plywood, a rapidly renewable resource and great alternative to hardwood, makes up the main body of the frames. When possible, the bamboo plywood is scrap material from other Black Dot Furniture projects.
Fasteners: There are no metal fasteners used in the frames. Brass pins are used to connect the detachable stand allowing the frame to sit, or hang, in many positions.
Non-toxic finishes: The frames are finished with Tried & True Original Wood Finishes (www.triedandtruewoodfinish.com), which is made from highly refined, highly polymerized linseed oil and pure beeswax. This product is 100% solids, and has no solvents or heavy metal driers.
